IAC Meeting November 15, 2018
In Attendance: Chu, Born, Zaloom, Darius, DuPre, Gummelt, Spoerry, Carroll, Mulvaney
Guests: (Golf) Jessie Mudd two students

Meeting called to order shortly after 2:00 p.m.

Dr. Chu introduced Jessie Mudd and asked him to tell about his program.

Jessie: When he arrived, we were under NCAA Scrutiny

 Our day-to-day includes workouts,

 We have several international students which really brings cohesiveness to the team o They have to rely on each other

 Performance has been good

 Lack/Need – On-Campus facility for practice o Driving range is unavailable; it is used for Intramural Sports o Golf Course we use – Beaumont Country Club

 They work well with us

 Closed when it rains

 We lose practice time

 Academics – good gpa

o 1000 apr (Academic Performance Rating) o 3.64 for team o Students either graduate or transfer out o Study hall

 Repercussions if they miss study hall or their gpa drops

 Recruiting o Internationally o Have to go where we can find kids o Working to build relations with potential student athletes

 Scheduling o Tournaments can affect attendance o Students are allowed 24 days of competition

Questions: Answers provided by Jessie

 Q: Dr. Chu: Does Schedule impact student’s relationship with instructors?

o A. Students give instructors their schedule up front to inform and allow for make-up work

 What would a practice facility look like?

o A. Could be as simple as a carport: hitting balls into a net. Would really like to have our own building where we can have the whole team together practicing.

 Q. How does the team travel?

o A. We take a large SUV with a Cargo Carrier provided by a donor. We travel with seven players.  We drive to Houston to fly. Our longest drive was to Laredo.



Dr. Chu turned the meeting over to Marco Born

 Marco announced his new hires: Crystel and Jinella and spoke of what a huge difference they have made, especially to Jon.

 We have removed the interim tag from Michelle Kuester formally placing her as head coach

 Kelsey Young gave two weeks’ notice today. She is moving to Houston.

 Projects: o Baseball Stadium – the dirt is gone o Working on drainage

o Basketball locker rooms are finished o Nutrition Center is in the works – Market Basket is helping, cutting costs o Golf – Driving range is a priority. We are exploring other opportunities for practice in other places and options

 Travel: o Raise money to buy van to use for Golf, Tennis, Track & Field, teams with smaller rosters, maybe even the Regents

 $75k - $100k

 Actively raising money

 Purchase and customize with Lamar logos

o We have interest from our Donor Base

 Jessie – Golf is extended “Development Officers” o Has the opportunity to play with donors and build relationships o Takes the opportunity to share the vision of Athletics with them o Marco commended Jessie for doing a good job with promoting the vision

 Football: 6-4 Winning Season o League win decided 11/15 by Nichols’ win over Southeastern. We have a chance to get in as an alternate qualifier o We put in a bid to host the NCAA game o Marketing Piece – “Six Wins in a Row!” o Sunday 11:30 a.m. ESPNU Announcement of selections o 24 teams make it. Top eight get a bye. Other 16 teams play each other. o NCAA on Campus a few weeks ago

 RFP: have selected sponsorship company from Frisco to partner with Marketing

 Football 2021: Play eight conference games rather than nine and three non-conference games

o Next two years – nine games before change o HBU plays eight games


 Promotions: Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball

o Hoop and Holler for a Dollar o December 17, 12:00 p.m. – Women’s Basketball Game hosting BISD elementary schools at the games. Free admission for the students.

 Soccer: Finished tournament here a Lamar. Not great, but excited for the future.

 Cross Country: College Station – Jamie Crow won Regionals and will compete in the finals in Madison, WI. Jordan also qualified as an at-large and will also run.

 Early Signing Day – 11-14-18 o National Letters of Intent coming in o Promising freshmen

 Q. Dr. Chu: Is Jordan still suspended? (Basketball)

o A. Yes, until further notice

 Q. Nutrition Center – Sponsorship

o A. Yes, Verbal with Market Basket

 Currently we are buying everything from Chartwell’s; very expensive

 Market Basket are allowing us to buy at cost for a significant savings

 Shakes, bananas, oranges  Will be called the Market Basket Nutrition Bar

 We will promote Partnership with “Health Updates” at games so there is visibility to the fans

 Served exclusively to athletes in the Strength and Conditioning area o Jessie: The athletes us it everyday

 The items are nutrition dense

 Life Skills: o We brought in a speaker, Don McPherson, with an NCAA grant

 He spoke on Domestic Violence and Assault  Every team except Men’s Basketball were represented

 We taped the presentation so they can see it

 We anticipate future speakers and conversation about the subject

 Athletes also receive bystander training

 We are trying to be proactive

 Our holiday party is on December 7

 Marco hosted Men’s Basketball at his home.

o He plans to have each team over for a meal every year o It’s a good opportunity to visit and get to know each other. There is no agenda.

Dr. Chu: This is the last meeting of the year. We will check the schedule in January.
