November 17, 2016

Meeting called to order at 2:04pm

Minutes from previous meeting were approved.

Jason Henderson introduced our Head Softball Coach, Holly Bruder.

Holly Bruder –  In her 5th year as head coach.

  • Academics always come first. Our team GPA has always been above 3.00.
  • This year, we have 9 freshmen out of 20 team members.
  • During each student-athlete’s first year, they have 8 hours of study hall per week. They can complete these hours in the softball offices (2 computers), in the hallway outside the offices or in the Dauphin Athletics Complex study hall lab.
  • Team GPA goal for this year is a 3.20.
  • Goal is to always have at least 3 student-athletes with a 4.00 GPA.
  • Goal is to have no upperclassmen in required study hall hours.
  • After the first year, most student-athletes learn how to study and what to study.

Needs:

  • More tutoring options. A lot of the tutors have schedules during class or practice.  It would be helpful if there were more tutoring hours in the evening.  Also, a more variety of subjects being tutored would be helpful.
  • The writing center – The tutors are helpful, but are very nervous about plagiarism and can’t help with all information in papers.

It was mentioned that sometimes professors for classes may be a better person to get assistance from.

  • Proctoring exams – It would be helpful if we were allowed to have exams proctored while on the road. Our conference championship is during finals week and it is tough to have all student-athletes take exams early.  It gives the student-athlete less time to study.

Dr. Chu thanked Coach Bruder for attending. IAC isanother avenue for athletics and academics to come together.

Since the last meeting, Dr. Chu met with Dr. Evans and they are looking into adding security lights to the track and adding a safety phone.  Mr. Henderson added that the information has been forwarded to Mr. Ness for funding.

Dr. Chu said that home games are going to be added to the Monday Morning Update for faculty/staff.

Dr. Chu met with the football team last week to discuss compliance issues.  The meeting went well and he will be attending meetings with other sports as well.

Mr. Henderson –

  • Cross Country – Men’s team won their 4th title in a row and the women’s team finished 3rd and had the top runner in the field.
  • Volleyball – Came up one game short of making the conference tournament. There were a lot of improvements this year.
  • Soccer – Won their last game of the season against McNeese.
  • Football – The last game is Saturday, November 19 at McNeese.
  • Men’s Basketball – Just started the season and had a big win on the road against Oregon State.
  • Women’s Basketball – Had a big win against St. Thomas in their first home game of the season.
  • The new lights, sound and video board are bringing more excitement to the Montagne Center.
  • Student-athletes Federal Graduation Rate is 45% and the Graduation Success Rate is 74%.

Dr. Chu mentioned that the lights in the Montagne Center are in the eyes of fans when looking up at the new video board.

There will not be a meeting in December.

IAC thanked Vernice Monroe for serving on the committee for so many years and wished her the best in her retirement.

Meeting adjourned at 2:35pm
