IAC Meeting

April 21, 2016

Meeting began at 2:00pm

Attendance – Jerry Bradley, Brad Mayer, Hsing Wei Chu, Jason Henderson, Helene Thill, Tracy Benson, Kenneth Young, Margeaux Marks, Brian Curran

Minutes from March approved.

New historical GPA form was handed out with football included.

Jason – APR question – Football is only close sport to the 930 cutoff.  Recruiting has changed and more high school student-athletes are being recruited.  Junior college transfers has been less.

Men’s Basketball – all are eligible, but team GPA was 2.18 in fall 2015.

Question from Jerry Bradley on how transfers effect APR.  If a student-athlete is at institution for at least 1 year and transfers to another 4-year school with a 2.60 GPA or higher, it will not effect APR.

Last week was a good week athletically.

Softball – Swept last weekend series.  We play at UCA this weekend.  Conference championship is in Lake Charles.

Baseball – Tied for 2nd place.  We play at HBU this weekend.  5 more weeks to play.  Conference championship is in Sugar Land.

Men’s Tennis – Won the regular season conference championship for the first time since 1976.  Michael Feucht was named player of the year and Scott Shankles was named coach of the year.  They have a good chance to win this weekend’s conference tournament.

Women’s Tennis – Made the conference tournament and play the #1 seed, Texas A&M Corpus Christi tomorrow.  It will be tough to beat Corpus.  Tournament is in Nacogdoches.

Women’s Golf – Won their 4th straight conference championship.  Wenny Chang was named player of the year and Jessica Steward was named coach of the year.

Men’s Golf – Took 4th at the conference tournament.  They only have one senior, so we should be even better next year.

Will Hibbs was named the FL McDonald winner for the Southland Conference.  He is pitching great and is also a 3.80 student.  He will continue his education in the M.B.A. program and could be drafted by MLB.

Track – Outdoor track conference championship is in Corpus Christi in a couple weeks.

Athletically we have had a good spring semester.

We are looking to finish strong academically.  We will send out another set of progress reports on Monday.  We are concerned about academics on a couple kids, but overall, we should be alright.

Dr. Chu – President has asked the council to determine how we can help teams with potential NCAA violations.  How can we prevent violations.  Try to prevent issues before they happen.

Jason added that it’s tough with a 300 page rule book with 12,000 interpretations out there on the bylaws.

Baseball violation accusation – Investigation was completed and no violations were found.

This is the last meeting of the 2015-16 year.

Meeting ended 2:20pm
