Certification Checklist

The State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) requires that all students seeking certification in Texas pass a comprehensive examination

The TExES Exam Test Approval from Lamar University authorizes Educational Testing Services (ETS) to administer the TExES to the Lamar student.

TExES -Superintendent

To be eligible to take the TExES Exam for Superintendent, please note the following  procedures. Please do not begin the application process until all requirements are met.

  1. Students will take the applicable LCE (Lamar Comprehensive Exam) with a passing score of 80% or better before being eligible for the state exam.
  2.  Each student enrolled in EDLD 5387 will be scheduled to take the LCE (Lamar Comprehensive Exam). Students who do not pass the (LCE) in EDLD 5387 will be given another opportunity to pass the exam in EDLD 5399.
  3.  Contact Dr. Bob Nicks at renicks@lamar.edu for schedules, registration and additional questions concerning the LCE exams.
  4. You will apply for the TExES in Tk20.
    1. Go to Application section.
    2. Create…Select TExES application Superintendent.

TExES -Principal

To be eligible to take the TExES Exam for Principals, please note the following  procedures. Please do not begin the application process until all requirements are met.

  1. Students will take the LCE (Lamar Comprehensive Exam) with a passing score of 80% or better before being eligible for the state exam.
  2.  Each student enrolled in EDLD 5397 will be scheduled to take the LCE. Students who do not pass the (LCE) in EDLD 5397 will be given another opportunity to pass the exam.
  3.  Students must have completed ILD and have a valid ILD certificate. 
  4.  Contact Kim Elizondo at kdthompson1@lamar.edu for schedules, registration and additional questions concerning the LCE exams.
  5. You will apply for the TExES in Tk20.
    1. Go to Application section.
    2. Create…Select TExES application Principal.

Lamar University students who do not successfully pass the TExES exam must enroll in a review course. To enroll or for more information, contact our office at luedlead@lamar.edu. Include your name and contact information. You will be notified when reviews are scheduled. After you complete the review, you will reapply in Tk20 to retake the exam.

Application for Texas Certificate:

After you have successfully passed your TExES exam, you will complete your application for your certificate:

  • Documentation of at least TWO (2) years teaching experience (a copy of your Service Record available from your district office) 
  • Complete certification application in TK20 and upload Service Record
    • To apply in TK20 …Go to Application section…Create…Select application… EDLD – Certification ‐Superintendent.
      OR
    • TO apply in TK20…Go to Application section…Create…Select application… EDLD – Certification ‐Principal.
  • Students without a TK20 account should print TExES application at https://www.lamar.edu/education/assessment/graduate-texes-exams.html and fax  to (409) 880-1804.
  • You must also complete the online application with the Texas State Board for Teacher Certification (SBEC) at https://secure.sbec.state.tx.us/SBECOnline/login.asp
    • Choose Lamar University Based and type in your certification area (Superintendent, Principal)


PLEASE DO NOT APPLY until all requirements below have been met:

  • Graduated with an M.Ed. OR for "certification only," must hold an approved master’s degree
  •  “M.Ed. Candidates” DO NOT APPLY until you have graduated, your degree is conferred, and the requirements below are met.
  •  “Superintendent and Certification Candidates” DO NOT APPLY until you have met the requirements below:
    • Completed all courses required by your degree plan
    • Completed internship
    • Passed the appropriate TExES exam
