About

Advising is one of the most significant components of a student's successful college experience. The Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) provides comprehensive academic advising and support for Lamar freshmen and sophomores. Through the use of proactive outreach and a holistic approach to advising, students learn that their advisor can be their main connection to Lamar. The advising relationship is a partnership and we work with you to match your interests with opportunities at Lamar, and help you integrate your academic and career plans.

Academic advisors are available to you for much more than course selection. Advisors will encourage and guide you in developing realistic goals and attainable educational plans. Advisors will offer information about your curriculum, graduation requirements, as well as university and college policies and procedures.  Advisors will connect you to campus resources and services that will help you pursue academic success. Advisors will promote your involvement in experiential-learning opportunities to help you make the most of your years at college.

Who We Are

We provide year-round academic advising and support for Lamar freshmen and sophomores. UAC advisors help students navigate the university environment and connect them to departments and faculty to ensure access to campus resources, as well as student success and retention.

The goal in the UAC is to help students get the most from their experience at Lamar University. We help incoming students make the tough transition from high school to college, and we help continuing or transfer students get connected here. Besides ensuring that students get the right classes to graduate on time, we also help students utilize resources, get involved, and connect with faculty and departments. UAC advisors provide consistent, dependable support. We're excited about helping every student succeed.

Mission Statement

The Undergraduate Advising Center at Lamar University guides students toward success by providing the tools they need to achieve their academic ambitions. By offering support and security, students are given the freedom and confidence they need to develop as students and make informed decisions about their future.

When to Meet with Your Advisor

We encourage you to cultivate a relationship with your academic advisor. Plan to meet with your advisor regularly throughout each semester. At a minimum, all students are required to meet with an advisor at least once a semester before registering for classes. You may see your advisor as often as you like and contact him or her by email and telephone.

Students who are admitted under Conditional Admission and students who are on academic probation are required to schedule two follow-up appointments with their advisor. Additionally, you are encouraged to contact your advisor if you are struggling in your courses. These meetings will focus on your academic progress and you can ask your advisor about receiving assistance from campus resources.  Research shows that these meetings and the use of support have a measurable impact on students' ability to improve their grades.
