Good morning, and thank you for being here today.
There are few places in the world where a single moment so clearly changed the course of history as it did right here in Beaumont, Texas. In 1901, the Spindletop gusher did more than strike oil—it ushered in the modern oil age. That discovery transformed how the world lives, works, travels, and grows! It reshaped global commerce, industrial organizations, and economic development in ways that are very much with us today. We are, quite literally, still living in the modern energy age that began in Beaumont over a century ago.
Energy has always been more than a commodity. It is foundational! Energy powers economies, enables national security, drives innovation, and underwrites modern quality of life. Every hospital, factory, data center, artificial intelligence center, and home depends on reliable, affordable energy. And as energy systems have grown more complex—spanning traditional hydrocarbons, new technologies, regulatory frameworks, global markets, and analytics—the importance of leadership and management in the energy sector has never been greater. The future of energy depends not only on engineering and extraction, but on strategy, stewardship, and sound decisionmaking.
Lamar University was born out of this context. Founded in Beaumont to serve Southeast Texas, Lamar was created to educate leaders for the region that powered the modern world. From its earliest days, the university grew alongside the industries that defined this region—energy, petrochemicals, manufacturing, and logistics. Our programs in engineering, technology, and applied education have long supported the workforce and leadership needs of the energy sector, and our graduates have gone on to lead companies, facilities, and innovations across this industry. Lamar’s history and the history of energy in Southeast Texas are deeply intertwined.
That is why the launch of the Doctor of Business Administration in Energy Management so powerfully reinforces our mission. This program reflects Lamar University’s longstanding commitment to producing leaders who understand both the technical realities of energy and the strategic challenges that define today’s energy economy. It represents our evolution from educating practitioners to educating executivelevel leaders—individuals prepared to manage complexity, lead organizations, and shape the future of energy at scale.
The DBA in Energy Management is intentionally comprehensive. It prepares leaders across the full spectrum of energy—from the petrochemical, and oil and gas industries that remain critical to meeting global demand, to emerging and expanding areas such as nuclear energy, including both largescale reactors and new modular nuclear technologies. This program recognizes that while technologies evolve, the need for disciplined management, ethical leadership, and strategic insight remains constant. It equips graduates to navigate markets, regulation, innovation, and risk in an increasingly interconnected energy landscape.
Lamar University is uniquely positioned to lead in this space. We sit at the geographic and economic heart of the Southeast Texas energy corridor—the birthplace of the modern energy economy. With deep industry connections, a tradition of applied research, and a clear focus on leadership development, Lamar is connecting the origins of the energy industry to its future. This program makes a clear statement: our energy legacy is not static or commemorative alone—it is active, forwardlooking, and grounded in responsibility.
As we look ahead, Lamar University will continue to be a leader in energy education and leadership. We will honor where energy began, here in Beaumont, while helping to shape where energy is going. That is our responsibility, our opportunity, and our future.
Thank you.
