LU Collegiate Archers win gold at national competition
The LU Collegiate Archers, an archery sports club sponsored by the Department of Recreational Sports competed in the US National 3D Collegiate Championships in October.
“My team and I are really dedicated to what we do,” said Cody Sahualla, club president and coach. “We put in the time for practice and constantly want to keep learning and improving.”
The members of the Men’s Barebow team - Cody Sahualla, Allen Sexton and Shawn Blair - won gold in the men’s barebow competition, placing first among thirteen universities across the nation. It’s the second consecutive year the men’s barebow team has placed first.
Cody Sahualla won third place in the men’s individual barebow division; Allen Sexton won seventh place, and Shawn Blair placed 21st. Sherry Banditrat placed 12th in the women’s individual barebow division.
In the entire tournament, the LU Collegiate Archers placed 7 out of 31 competing teams. This victory is nothing new to the LU Collegiate Archers and especially for Sahualla. “I’ve won more than 23 national awards in archery and 81 total,” said Sahualla.
The US National 3D Collegiate Championships are sponsored by USA Archery, the national governing body for the Olympic sport of archery. USA Archery is recognized by the US Olympic Committee for the purpose of selecting and training men’s and women’s teams to represent the U.S. in the Olympic, Paralympic and Pan American Games.
