LU accounting majors receive NABA scholarship
Mariah McCoy and Yasmine Johnson, accounting majors at Lamar University and members of the National Association of Black Accountants Lamar University Chapter, were chosen to receive the 2019 NABA Houston Metropolitan Chapter Scholarship.
“The motto for NABA is “lifting as we climb.” This quote stands out to me because on the road to success, we motivate those to flourish along with us. To me this organization is about building relationships, networking and encouraging students to reach their goals,” said McCoy. “When I walked across the stage to receive the NABA Houston Metropolitan Chapter Scholarship I felt accomplished and honored. That day was unlike any other. I left inspired and determined to work diligently toward my career. Because of NABA I believe the sky is the limit.”
McCoy is looking forward to attending a NABA conference this fall and networking with accounting firm representatives and like-minded individuals.
“It means so much to have a little extra help to continue to chase my dreams and be honored for being an accounting major. Accounting is definitely not an easy major and to receive a scholarship because someone believes that you can be a leader in the business arena, sheds a light on my path,” said Johnson. “I am very honored and thankful to be a recipient of the NABA Scholarship.”
In order to be considered for the scholarship, McCoy and Johnson completed the application, submitted two letters of recommendation, wrote an essay and provided their official transcripts.
“Many students run away from scholarships that require an essay, but what I always remember is that anything in life worth having, requires a little more effort,” said Johnson.
