Members and guests of Women and Philanthropy, an organization Nancy Evans founded, will be the first to see artwork the former first lady of Lamar University envisioned.

The winter luncheon of Women and Philanthropy will be held Feb. 19, at 11:30 a.m. on the first floor of Lamar University’s new Science and Technology Building with a 25-foot mosaic as its backdrop.

One of the last pieces of artwork Evans initiated for LU’s public art collection prior to her death in June 2018, was a magnificent mosaic depicting a body of water with lily pads and rippling reflection by renowned artist Dixie Friend Gay. The artwork was installed in the lobby of the Science and Technology building, the first classroom facility to be built on the campus in 30 years.

Although the grand opening for the building is scheduled for April 3, the organization founded by Evans will get a sneak peek of the building, the artwork and have the opportunity to meet Dixie Friend Gay as well as Julie Richey, a mosaic artist and instructor. The two are featured speakers at the luncheon.

“Mrs. Evans was committed to the idea that art should be shared and available to all,” said Lamar University’s Vice Provost for Digital Learning Division of Distance Learning and Chair of Women and Philanthropy Dr. Brenda Nichols. “The University should help draw people together through giving, not just money but time, energy and resources to enrich the community and the lives of those in our region.”

Women and Philanthropy is committed to promoting philanthropic education, leadership and advocacy by empowering women in be active participants in the giving process.
