Galiano Memorial Scholarship supports future journalists

The Lamar University Foundation has finalized a new scholarship to assist students in their pursuits in the study of communication. The Julian M. Galiano Memorial Scholarship in Communication was established upon the wishes of the late Julian Galiano, who was an important figure in southeast Texas news media.

The scholarship will begin in the fall of 2017 for communication majors, with a preference for those with a desire to pursue a career in journalism.

A longtime Southeast Texas newsman, Galiano graduated French High School in Beaumont before attending Lamar University. He served as editor of the University Press from 1971-1972 where he became known as a talented journalist. He helped to name the newspaper the “University Press.

After graduating from Lamar University, he began a career in journalism at the Port Arthur News and later joined the reporters of the Beaumont Enterprise.  During his career he covered the courts, sports, and work on the copy desk for sports and general news.

Galiano had an outstanding memory of sports knowledge, of which he was a local authority. He covered the Jefferson County Courthouse while working for the Port Arthur News, and he was always the first to the scene thanks to his many connections. His deep knowledge of Beaumont and regional history was always an asset in the newsroom.

Galiano was proud of his relationship with his friends and family. He praised his family members and their accomplishments in his writing for the Beaumont Enterprise. After his death, the Enterprise ran one of his articles as a tribute to his many contributions to journalism and to his skills of friendship.
