Local businesswoman Veron Banks opened Mrs. V’s Kitchen, Jamaican Style in 2023, and has garnered a lot of business.

“We started serving last January and we have been so happy with support and the turnout from the community,” Banks said. “We serve traditional, authentic Jamaican cuisine that I make from scratch.”

The truck is set up in two locations. On Thursdays and Saturday’s Banks can be found at the Shell station on the corner of Highway 105 and Major Drive. On Tuesdays, she sets up at the car wash behind Target at 5550 Eastex Freeway.

“We serve jerk chicken and jerk shrimp tacos every (Taco) Tuesday, and they have become one of the most popular and asked about dishes we have,” Banks said. “We open at 11:30 a.m. and we sell out before 3 p.m.”

V’s tacos come loaded down with a choice of jerk-spiced chicken or shrimp with mango or pineapple, cilantro and other fresh herbs, and a special sauce topped on a fresh corn or flour tortilla.

“On Thursdays and Saturdays, our menu changes,” Banks said. “We serve a variety of traditional dish including jerk chicken, brown stew chicken, jerk pork chops, ox tails, curry chicken, pigs feet, rice and peas, mac and cheese, baked beans and beef, and steamed cabbage with carrots.

“The most popular items on the menu are jerk tacos, brown chicken stew, and ox tails. We have customers asking all the time about the stew and the ox tails, and it’s truly a blessing.”

Banks said she believes it is not just her cooking but also the quality of her Jamaican cuisine — which is hard to find in Southeast Texas — that sets her apart.

“There’s nobody cooking jerk chicken,” she said. “There is nobody cooking brown stew chicken. So, there’s different items that I cook that nobody here cooks.”
