WoW events to begin Aug. 13

LU’s office of new student and leadership programs has announced the annual Week of Welcome schedule. Activities begin Aug. 13 and events are planned through Aug. 22.

Guidelines and measures will be in place to ensure students remain as safe as possible when attending these events, the program’s website states. All event attendees will be required to wear masks or face coverings. Students are recommended to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and not attend if they feel ill. All events will have social distancing and other protocols in place.

“We are committed to ensuring that you are welcomed to LU, while also being as safe as possible,” the website states.

Attendance will be capped and students are advised to arrive early. If attendance at reaches the cap, students will only be let in on a metered attendance.

Events will be held online as well as in person.

August 13

Week of Welcome will kick off with Ice Pops with OL’s (orientation leaders), starting at 1 p.m. Orientation leaders will walk around the residence halls handing out ice pops to students during move in. At 2 p.m., there will be Free Play at the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center until 4 p.m., which includes table tennis, badminton and other activities.

New students will be able to attend a virtual Netflix watch party with their orientation leaders at 7 p.m.

August 14

Trivia Break will be held in the Setzer Student Center and over Zoom from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The trivia will be accessible on mobile devices. Students can also earn points for their team during the trivia if they participate in first year games. The Recreational Sports Center will host Game Night at the Rec, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

August 15

Cardinals Activity Board will host First Night with CAB, from 5-8 p.m., on the Dining Hall Lawn, which will feature Kona Ice, bubble soccer and more.

August 16

First year students, in advance of their classes, which begin Aug. 18, will tour the campus with orientation leaders to familiarize them with academic buildings, noon-3 p.m.

The Recreational Sports Center will host First Year Meet Up from 4-6 p.m., Aug. 16, which includes snacks and games. This event will also be available on Zoom for those who prefer to meet virtually.

Casino Night will be held from 6-9 p.m. in the Setzer Student Center which includes blackjack, Texas Hold’em, roulette and more.

August 17

An Academic Success Conference will be held in the Setzer Student Center from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Students will meet and get advice from fellow LU students, faculty, and staff and will be able to customize their experiences by choosing breakout sessions on a variety of topics, including study skills, time management, goal setting, and much more,” the website states.

Lunch and T-shirts will be provided. 

A college meet and greet where students will be able to meet faculty and staff from their academic college will be held from 1-2 p.m.

The Recreational Sports Center will host Cardinal Kickoff from 3-5 p.m. where students can visit with department resources and student organizations and receive free swag. The event will also feature a hypnotist show.

Barnes and Noble will also host a VIP night from 4:30 p.m.–6 p.m. featuring food, free giveaways and special discounts.

August 18 — First Class Day

There will be Ask a Card booths at both the Gray Library breezeway and the Setzer Student Center from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the booths will also be available at the same times and locations on Aug. 19.

Pizza with the Chief will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 125 Setzer Student Center, Aug. 18, where students can meet the LU Police Chief Hector A. Flores. 

At 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Cardinal Communities will host Musical Squares on the Dining Hall Lawn. Students will compete for prizes.

Rec Sports will host AirOSport from 2-5 p.m. in the Recreational Sports Center Arena. The event will be a non-contact team sport with similarities to ultimate and disk golf. During the game, teams will pass the disk around to find an open player to shoot at the targets to score, while the other team tries to defend the targets and block/intercept passes and shots.

From 4-6 p.m., the Residence Hall Association will host Staying Cool at the Pool at the Cardinal Village Pool.

August 19

A Say Hi to Handshake event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Setzer Student Center Atrium. Students will be able to login and activate their Handshake account and receive a free T-shirt.

From 5-7 p.m. at the dining hall lawn there will be a Greek life BBQ that will feature hamburgers, hot dogs, and games. The National PanHellenic council will be hosting “hump day” from 8-10 p.m. on the dining hall lawn which showcases sororities’ and fraternities’ tradition of strolling to music.

August 20

A Craft with the Student Health Center event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in 125 Setzer Student Center.

For transfer students, a T-shirt swap will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Transfer students can bring a T-shirt from their old school and swap it for a new LU shirt, and learn about the new transfer student organization, Fresh Feathers.

Boost Your Knowledge will be held in Gray Library, from noon-3 p.m. Students can visit the tutoring center to learn about services and schedule appointments. Snacks and giveaways will be provided.

The College Panhellenic Council will host CPC Taste of Recruitment from 6-8 p.m. in the Setzer Student Center circle drive. The event will feature Kona Ice.

Outdoor Pursuits will host S’mores in the Recreational Sports Center from 6-9 p.m.

Students will have the chance to make LU swag in the Setzer Student Center Food Court from 7-9 p.m.

August 21

Outdoor pursuits will host crate stacking from 10 a.m. to noon in the Recreational Sports Center Multipurpose Court.

A petting zoo will be on the Dining Hall Lawn, from 2-5 p.m.

First year games held at the Ty Terrell Track from 6-8 p.m.

August 22

To conclude Week of Welcome activities, Late Night at the SET will be held in the Setzer Student Center from 7-10 p.m. The event features games, swag and more.
