Lamar University Intramural Sports competitions are set to begin Feb. 8 and will continue until April 30, with start and end dates differing according to each sport.

Sports include 7-on-7 Flag Football, Archery Tag, 5-on-5 Basketball, 8-on-8 Outdoor Cricket, Indoor Soccer, and 6-on-6 Volleyball.

“Starting out with basketball and football, those sports are usually ones that have lots of involvement, and I believe that we’ve already had people start signing up for both of those,” Jenna Malone, intramural and club sports graduate assistant, said.

Making its debut this semester is Indoor Whiffle Ball, which Malone said she hopes to see catch on.

“We’re hoping that will be our way to get people involved with a sport like baseball or softball,” she said. “Last semester, I believe we tried something called Tri-Softball — where you did something with three teams at a time — which didn’t really work out. We’re hoping people see that with whiffle ball, it’s not as dangerous. It won’t hurt if you get hit with the ball, and you don’t need cleats or a bat or a glove.”

Students interested in participating in Intramural Sports should visit imleagues.com to set up an account, and are encouraged to visit or call the office, located in the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center for additional help or questions.

“(imleagues.com is) pretty much what every university uses to do intramural sports,” Malone said. “They have all the sports up there already. Students will have to make an account if they don’t have one and use their Lamar credentials to do so.”

Students can either form their own teams or join other teams in need of extra players.

“Once you’re signed into the website and have an account, you can either join as a free agent, so teams that don’t have enough members can pick you up, or make your own team and see who joins it,” Malone said. “With the website, you can also check where you are in the league, place wise, and the schedule of your games as well.”
