Men of Excellence and UNIDAD Scholars Host “The Let Out”

The Men of Excellence and UNIDAD Scholars invites all students to “The Let Out,” a free event on Dec. 3 from 4 - 5 p.m. in room 120 of the Setzer Center. Students must RSVP to the event at shorturl.at/oNU89.

“’The Let Out’ is an event to help us get together one last time before the semester ends,” Baytown freshman Samantha Martinez said. “Finals are coming up, and everybody’s super stressed and we’re trying to let out some of that stress. It’s mostly just going to have games, food, prizes, and fun.”

The idea for “The Let Out” came from the Amazon Alexa definition of the phrase, Martinez said.

“A ‘let out’ is something that closes just after something really big (is finished),” Ashley Iwunwanne, coordinator for multicultural retention and diversity said. “It’s just meant for calm and cool vibes.”

Activities at The Let Out include a Kahoot game about pop culture, scavenger hunts, a word scramble and more — all with prizes. There will also be free barbeque chicken, sides, and drinks.

“I really think students should come to this event because it’s going to be really fun,” Martinez said. “We did a lot of events just for the students so they could come out and relax before finals.”

Iwunwanne said she expects increased numbers in their UNIDAD and Men of Excellence programs after the event.

“I really want students to be familiar with who they are,” she said. “So this is sort of that introduction event before the spring semester and fall 2020.”

Martinez the Men of Excellence and UNIDAD scholars are groups to help minorities transfer from high school to college.

“We give stress management, seminars, and we get (members) into tutoring so that they can succeed in class,” she said. “We really helped them out because we don’t want these kids to stay in their dorm all day and just don’t do anything.”
