Exemplary Applications

Share Your Story Through Your Application

We value our students and want to hear your story! Let us help you by sharing our tips to help you submit an exemplary application to the academy!

To get started, here are a few things to remember as you begin your application. First, check your email to see if we have sent a link to apply. Second, no one aspect or element of your application will be used to make a decision or determination about your application. We use a holistic review process and review everything submitted. Therefore, try to ensure that your application is complete, well articulated and gives us an opportunity to learn your story.

Part One

  • Reach out to us and let us know what questions you may have ahead of time at texas.academy@lamar.edu.
We are happy to help and look forward to hearing from you.
  • Schedule a parent/student visit at Texas Academy.
  • Attend regularly-scheduled Texas Academy Preview Days and Open Houses to learn more, when available. Find us at these events and introduce yourself.

Part Two

  • See SAT, ACT and TSI and score reporting information below — very important
  • Recommendation letters should be requested from people who know your work ethic, integrity and ability to succeed with challenging and rigorous academics.
Be sure to request permission of the person you are requesting a recommendation from prior to including their email in your application.
  • Application Essays should be well-written and read aloud to at least two others; request feedback to improve your essay prior to submitting your essay in the online application. Be sure to tell your story — this is important!
  • Interviews should be practiced and rehearsed ahead of time with a family member or trusted mentor. This is also an opportunity to tell your story. Interviews will last approximately 30 minutes and need to include at least one parent.

Questions about PSAT, SAT, ACT, and TSI

Applications with standardized test scores are welcomed and considered an additional data point to your application. Test scores will not exclude any student from acceptance into the academy:

  • PSAT — submit, if available and no other test score is available
  • ACT — minimum composite score of at least 21; or
  • SAT — no less than 580 on the Evidence-Based Reading & Writing (EBRW) and 550 on Math
  • TSI — TSI scores cannot be used for admissions decisions; all applicants must be TSI exempt or complete

ACT, SAT, and other testing services
