What is SGA?
A collection of students across campus that serve in these offices: President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Senator, Justice, House Representative, and Social Platform Directors. These students serve with the common goal of improving Lamar and giving the student body a voice to address concerns they may have.
How can I become a House Representative?
Each registered student organization at LU has the option to elect or appoint a representative to serve on the SGA House of Representatives. If you would like to become a House Representative, contact the leaders of your student organization to see if the position is vacant.
How can I become a Senator?
Class Senators are voted on by the student body during elections, which are held at the end of each Spring semester. College Senators are appointed by the Dean of each college. If you see a vacancy in the College Senators, contact your Dean to see if qualify to represent your college. The Senator for the Reaud Honor College is appointed by the Honors Student Association. The Senator for Residence Life is appointed by the Residence Hall Association, a student organization open to all students living in university housing. The Senator for Greek Life is appointed by the Greek Council.
What are the duties of Senators?
Senators represent their respective class, college, or organization and work on various projects suggested by their dean and/or fellow students.
How can I become an Executive Officer?
Executive Officers are voted on by the student body during elections, which are held at the end of each Spring semester. Positions include President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer.
What is the role of Executive Officers?
Executive officers advise senators on their projects while also addressing other issues they see at Lamar through their own projects. Overall executive officers support the Senators, Judiciaries, and House Representatives so that they may complete their goals, while also holding office hours each week that the student body has access to and can use to bring up specific issues.
What is a house session?
House sessions are where House Representatives and Executive Officers meet to discuss the progression of senator’s projects so that the representatives can then relay the information back to their respective organizations. If a resolution has passed in the senate then that resolution moves into the house to be passed. From there the house needs to be at quota (1/2 + 1 of all House Representatives) in order to vote on the resolution.
What is a joint session?
A combined meeting of Senators, Executive officers, and House Representatives. Here Senators and executive officers discuss projects that are in the works and house representatives have the chance to directly speak to senators about their projects and bring issues up. Joint sessions are also open to the general student body.
