Information for SGA Candidates

Open seats on the 2024-25 SGA are President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Senior Class Senator, Junior Class Senator, and Sophomore Class Senator. Requirements for each position and a summary of duties are listed below.

Duties for each position in the Student Government Association are listed in the SGA Bylaws.

2023 Election Timeline

Monday, March 4: Application for SGA candidacy opens at 12:00 pm (noon)

Tuesday, March 19: Informational meeting for prospective SGA candidates, 5:30 pm, Setzer Student Center 229-Sea Rim

Wednesday, March 20: Informational meeting for prospective SGA candidates, 5:00 pm, Setzer Student Center 229-Sea Rim

Wednesday, March 20: Application for SGA candidacy closes at 8:00 pm

Thursday, March 21: Mandatory candidate meeting, 5:30 pm, Setzer Student Center 229-Sea Rim

March 21 - April 8: Candidate campaign period

April 8 - April 9: SGA voting via Self-Serv Banner

Requirements for All Open Seats

  • 2.5 or higher current cumulative GPA
  • Must be a full-time student at Lamar University
  • Must attend the Mandatory Candidate Meeting on Thursday, March 21 at 5:30 pm

Additional Requirements

President

  • Must have completed at least 45 semester credit hours at the time of filing for office.
  • Must have been enrolled at Lamar University at least one year prior to filing for office.
  • Two long semesters count as one year. Two summer sessions count as one long semester.
  • If elected, student cannot serve as President of any other student organization or as an officer in more than two student organizations.

Vice President

  • Must have completed at least 30 semester credit hours at the time of filing for office.
  • Must have been enrolled at Lamar University at least one year prior to filing for office.
  • Two long semesters count as one year. Two summer sessions count as one long semester.
  • If elected, student cannot serve as an officer in more than two student organizations.

Secretary-Treasurer

  • Must have completed at least 12 semester credit hours at the time of filing for office.
  • Must have completed one long semester at Lamar University immediately prior to the semester of their election.
  • If elected, student cannot serve as an officer in more than two student organizations.

Senior Class Senator

  • Must have completed at least 90 semester credit hours by the start of the Senator's term of office, June 1, 2024.

Junior Class Senator

  • Must have completed at least 60 semester credit hours by the start of the Senator's term of office, June 1, 2024.

Sophomore Class Senator

  • Must have completed at least 30 semester credit hours by the start of the Senator's term of office, June 1, 2024.
