Time: 7:00 pm (students should arrive promptly one hour prior to start time)

Time: 8:30 am (students should arrive promptly one hour prior to start time)

College of Business

Time: 11:00 am (students should arrive promptly one hour prior to start time)

College of Fine Arts & Communication

Time: 2:00 pm (students should arrive promptly one hour prior to start time)

Location:

Commencement will be held in the Montagne Center. Graduates should arrive an hour before the official start time to ensure plenty of time to check in and line up. Please plan for heavy traffic both before and after the ceremony.

Please join us for an informal reception, located upstairs in the concourse area of the Montagne Center, following the ceremony.

Graduate Students

Online Graduation Application Deadline:

October 9, 2017

  • The online application will only be accessible in Self-Service Banner after your department has notified Graduate Studies. Once notified, you should receive an email (sent to your Lamar University email). Please check spam.

If you try to apply prior to the College of Graduate Studies receiving your eligibility you will receive an error:

No Curriculum Found

  • Late applicants must contact the College of Graduate Studies, Wimberly 219, (409) 880-8229 or lugradstudies@lamar.edu. There will be additional paperwork required for late applicants.
  • You must still apply for graduation even if you do not plan to attend graduation.
  • If you will not be attending the commencement ceremony, your diploma will be mailed out the week following commencement.
  • Don't forget to pay the graduation fee at the Cashier's Office, Wimberly Building room 114, or online through Self-Service-Banner. Please pay the fee by November 07, 2017. 

Doctoral Graduation Fee: $44.45*

Masters Graduation Fee: $24.45*

*If you do not graduate, the graduation fee will NOT be refunded or applied to future semesters.

  • Additional copies of diploma can be ordered at the time of application for $25.00 each. Please email grgraduation@lamar.edu if you would like an additional diploma.
  • Clear all financial and property obligations prior to the payment deadline.

Undergraduate Students

Deadlines

Applications for Fall 2017 graduation will begin September 11, 2017*

The undergraduate application deadline is November 7, 2017

Students have until November 7, 2017 to pay graduation fees

*If you are a graduate your department must notify the College of Graduate Studies if you are eligible before you can apply. If you are an undergraduate your department must notify the Records Department if you are eligible before you can apply.

Fees

Doctoral Graduation Fee: $44.45*

Masters Graduation Fee: $24.45*

Undergraduate Graduation Fee: $24.45*

*If you do not graduate, the graduation fee will NOT be refunded or applied to future semesters.

This covers processing and includes one copy of your diploma. Additional copies can be ordered at the time of application for $25 each.

Undergraduates please notify uggraduation@lamar.edu if you need an additional diploma.

Holds

If you owe a balance to Lamar University, such as parking fees, graduation fees, library fines or unpaid tuition, you will not receive your diploma. If Lamar University has not received your transcripts from other institutions, your diploma will likewise be held. Students with holds will still be allowed to participate in the commencement exercises, but will not receive their diploma until all academic and financial obligations have been met. Please note the following information if you believe you have an unmet obligation:

  • Call the Cashiers Office at 409-880-8390 or 409-880-8320 to check on financial holds
  • Call Financial Aid at 409-880-8450 to check if you must complete Exit counseling
  • Call the Mary and John Gray Library at 409-880-8133 to check if you have unreturned books or money owed
  • A "Registration Hold" on your account that states "Graduating Reapply to Register" will not stop graduation or prevent the receipt of a diploma. This hold prevents further registration at Lamar University without an updated admissions application. If you plan to attend Lamar University following commencement, please contact Admissions at 409-880-8888 or apply online at applytexas.org

All students with a directory restriction or confidentiality indicator on their record will not appear in the commencement program or subsequent press release unless this confidentiality restriction is removed by the application deadline. To remove this directory/confidentiality hold, please visit the Records Office in Wimberly 112  or email the completed Directory Hold Form  (sign and date bottom section if removing hold)  to uggraduation@lamar.edu if you are an undergraduate or grgraduations@lamar.edu if you are a graduate, using your official LU-issued email account.

Academic Attire

With the exception of active duty military personnel (see below), all graduates must wear the appropriate academic regalia to participate in the commencement ceremony. Caps, gowns and hoods may be purchased at the LU Bookstore. Contact the bookstore at (409) 880-8342 or through their websitePlease be aware that your regalia must be ordered by November 30th in order to be available for commencement.

  • Candidates should wear their tassels over the right eye until the degree is awarded and over the left eye afterward.
  • Candidates are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes. There will be a good deal of standing and walking during the ceremony, including inclined surfaces.
  • Candidates should leave purses, jackets and other personal items with a friend or family member. There will not be a secure place to leave these items during the ceremony and graduates may not be returning to the rooms they check into.

Military

Active duty military personnel are encouraged to wear their Class A or Dress Blue Uniform.

Red, White and Blue Military Service Cords will be made available to any active duty, guard/reserve or veteran student interested in wearing one during the commencement ceremony. Students interested in allowing Lamar University to honor their service with a Military Service Cord should contact the Office of Veterans Affairs at (409) 880-8437 or by emailing va@lamar.edu.

Graduation Honors

To be designated as an honor graduate, an undergraduate member of the graduating class must have completed at least 60 semester hours at Lamar University and must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 for all undergraduate course work attempted at Lamar University. Only coursework completed at Lamar University will be included in the G.P.A calculation for honors. Transfer coursework will not be included in the calculation. Honor cords will be handed out when you check in day of commencement.

Cum Laude - 3.5 to 3.64

Magna Cum Laude - 3.65 to 3.79

Summa Cum Laude - 3.8 to 4.0

Grades made the semester of graduation are included in calculation of grade point averages for honors.

Honor graduates will have their honor noted on their diploma, and will be recognized at the commencement ceremony with red and white honor cords.

 

Diplomas and Transcripts

Your official name as entered in Lamar University's records system will be used for graduation unless a name change is processed by Records Office (Wimberly 102, 409-880-8365) by the payment deadline. You will need to complete an official Name Change form. However, if a student wishes to add or remove a maiden or middle name for the diploma and commencement program, they just need to indicate the change on their graduation application.

Generally, students will receive their diploma at the END of the commencement exercises. If you choose NOT to attend the ceremony, your diploma will be mailed to you the week following the commencement ceremony. It will be mailed to the address indicated on your graduation application. If all of your courses have not yet been graded at the time of commencement, your diploma will not be available at commencement. We will mail your diploma to the mailing address you provided on your graduation application as soon as all course grades have been entered and eligibility confirmed.

If you would like to order additional copies of your diploma, please notify us at grgraduations@lamar.edu for graduate students and uggraduation@lamar.edu for undergraduate students. Additional diplomas are $25 each.

Degrees and certifications will not be posted on transcripts until the first business day following commencement exercises. If you need an official transcript reflecting your degree, ask to place a "Hold for Degree" notice on your transcript request.

Commencement Programs

Additional Information

  • Be sure to remove confidentiality restrictions on your account if you want your name included in the program, website and press releases. You will be notified by email if you have a confidentiality restriction.
  • Check this website the Monday before commencement to see if your name is on the graduation list.
  • Pick a place to meet family and friends after the ceremony. Lamar University will be hosting a reception after the ceremony and graduates and guests are welcome to attend.
  • As you celebrate your accomplishment, please remember this is an important academic ceremony and be respectful of those around you. The possession or use of alcohol, noisemakers such as air horns, fireworks, balloons, flags, confetti, banners, selfie sticks or illegal substances is strictly prohibited. This list is not comprehensive. If a device is disruptive to the other guests or graduates it will not be allowed in the arena or on the floor.
  • Students leaving the ceremony early will not be able to pick their diploma up as they leave. Diplomas are only awarded at the end of the ceremony, we will mail all other diplomas the week following commencement.
  • Flash Photography will be your official commencement photographer. Every graduate will be photographed at the ceremony. If you have not received proofs within 2 weeks of the ceremony, please contact Flash directly at 888-325-3930 or at FLASHphotography.com.
