Fall - 2017

11/9 - Red White and You Veteran's Job Fair

On November 9, 2017, STAIRSTEP students Zakary Noel, Diego Fernandez, and Robert Monarch ran a booth at the 2017 Red, White & You Veteran’s Job Fair. From 9 to 12 AM at  Workforce Solutions in Beaumont, they talked to returning veterans about opportunities for them to further their education at Lamar University. Many of the veterans who stopped by the booth were provided with information flyers and booklets regarding the many options for education at Lamar University. Throughout the fair, the students outreached to 20 veterans.

11/3 - Computer Science Presentation at Cardinal View

On November 3, 2017, STAIRSTEP members Diego Fernandez and Madison Bordeaux represented the Computer Science Department at Cardinal View. At the Montaigne Center, they talked to around 8 students and their families about the computer science department and careers in computer science. Afterwards, Fernandez and Bordeaux, along with Mr. Frank Sun, escorted the computer science students and their families to the Maes building, where the incoming students were given a presentation on the Computer Science Department at Lamar University, careers in computing, and many of the opportunities available to students at Lamar. After the presentation, the incoming students and their families proceeded with their schedule and ate at the dining hall.

10/12 - Majors Minors and More

On Thursday, October 12, STAIRSTEP member Diego Fernandez accompanied Dr. Stefan Andrei, and represented the Lamar University Computer Science Department at the “Majors, Minors and More!” event. From 1:30 to 3:30 PM, Fernandez interacted with students who have not decided what their major was going to be, or were considering getting a minor in computer science. Fernandez interacted with 5 students who were interested in pursuing a degree in computer science at Lamar University.

9/27 - Cardinal Communities

On September 27 from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, STAIRSTEP was invited to present information to one of the department’s four cardinal communities, a freshman interest group supporting the initiatives of the department’s First Year Success Program. Dr. Sujing Wang, Ethan Hall and Robert Monarch presented information about STAIRSTEP, general undergraduate research, advice to incoming freshman majoring in computer science, and information about joining STAIRSTEP and other research opportunities. There were 14 students in attendance for Dr. Jing Zhang’s Cardinal community, along with Dr. Jiangjiang Liu and Dr. Sujing Wang. After speaking, the members stayed for the duration of the meeting and answered questions from the freshmen students following the meeting.

9/25 - Cardinal Communities

On September 25 from 11:30 to 12:30, STAIRSTEP was invited to present information about the group, information about general undergraduate research, advice to incoming freshman majoring in computer science, and information about joining STAIRSTEP and  other research opportunities. Dr. Sujing Wang, Diego Fernandez and Robert Monarch presented this information to one of the department’s four cardinal communities, supporting the initiatives of the department’s First Year Success program. There were 9 students in attendance for Mr. Frank Sun’s Cardinal community, along with Dr. Jiangjiang Liu and Dr. Sujing Wang. After speaking, thepresenters stayed for the duration of the meeting and answered questions from the freshmen students following the meeting.

Summer - 2017

7/11 - Investor Club Tour

On July 11, 2017, STAIRSTEP members Diego Fernandez and Ethan Hall had a brief meeting alongside Dr. Stefan Andrei and Greg Yera with the South East Texas Investment Club on 3D printing. The club had brought 12 of their members for the visit. The students and faculty provided the visitors with a tour around the 3D printing lab, the 3D printers, plastic used for the process, and models that had already been printed. The presenters also answered many questions that the members of the investment club had.

Spring - 2017

4/13 - Ozen Math Induction

On April 13, 2017, STAIRSTEP was invited to the Ozen Math Induction event to help increase high school student’s interest in perusing a college education in a STEM field. Diego Fernandez and Ethan Hall presented their robotics and machine learning research in the form of a poster and allowed students to come and ask questions about the research or a STEM major. Around 25 students attended the event, and the STAIRSTEP members that attended were able to make an education in STEM appealing to the high schoolers.

3/22 - Memorial STEM Meeting

On March 22, 2017, researchers from each of the STAIRSTEP disciplines went to Memorial High School in Port Arthur to a STEM meeting. There were several teachers, students, and parents in attendance. Each discipline represented each of their respective fields and stayed after to answer any questions that any attendees had. With respect to Computer Science, nearly a dozen parents, teachers, and students came by to view the LEAP motion demonstration that was set up, and at least three students had shown interest in the Lamar Computer Science Department and/or computer science with STAIRSTEP.
