Department of Art and Design to present art history lecture

The Department of Art & Design will host an art history lecture with special guest Dr. Mary Slavkin, assistant professor of art history at Young Harris College in Georgia. The event will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at 6:30 pm via Zoom.

The lecture, Fairies, Muses, and Saints: Passive Sexuality and Social Reform at the Salons of the Rose + Croix will explore the artists who participated in this exhibition and wanted to dispute what was displayed as modern degeneration, as well as produce social improvement with their art. The exhibitors relied heavily on literature, history and religion to develop and exhibit their interpretations of these types. Yet, they did not develop stable categories. Instead they produced a range of interpretations.

This presentation will show how these artists both worked to develop positive female archetypes and struggled with a variety of issues including how to depict sexuality, the roles of specificity and stylization and, of utmost importance to many of them, the importance of female passivity.
