Wind Ensemble, Concert Band perform Oct. 5

Lamar University’s first band concert of the 2017-18 school year, featuring the Wind Ensemble and Concert Band, is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, October 5, in the University Theatre on the Lamar University campus.

The Concert Band will begin the evening with three works for wind band including “Aquarium” by the Dutch composer Johan de Meij, “Lightning Field” by John Mackey and Sergei Prokofiev’s popular “March, Op. 99.”

The Wind Ensemble will begin the second half of the concert with Percy Grainger’s “Themes from ‘Green Bushes’.”   The ensemble will then commemorate the passing of composer David Maslanka with a performance of his “Requiem,” written in 2013 as a remembrance of the World War II holocaust.

The Wind Ensemble will conclude the program with David Gillingham’s “With Heart and Voice” and “Oh, Henry!” by Ryan Nowlin.

All performers in the Wind Ensemble and Concert Band are Lamar University student musicians.   The conductors are Andrew McMahan, director of bands, and Eric Shannon, assistant director of bands and director of athletic bands.

The concert is sponsored by the Lamar University Band Program, Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music and College of Fine Arts and Communication. Admission is free and the performance is open to the public; no tickets or advanced reservations are required.
