Registration open for free Diversity & Inclusion Conference

Registration is now open for the Lamar University’s Diversity and Inclusion Conference Saturday, April 9. The event, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will be held in the Setzer Student Center and is free and open to all faculty, staff and students.

“This is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to come together to celebrate diversity and inclusion in our community,” said Cynthia Parra, assistant director of LU’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, which is dedicated to educating and empowering the community with tools that advance understanding and equity for all.

The conference will include dynamic speakers, workshops, conversations, and experiences to enlighten participants on the meaning of diversity and inclusion, Parra said. “This will also be an opportunity to network with Lamar University, Lamar Institute of Technology, Lamar State College - Orange, and Lamar State College - Port Arthur faculty, staff and students.”

In the morning, participants will hear from keynote speakers Monti Washington and Julie Garcia of Diversity University, in an interactive address that challenges stereotypes in a fun, relatable and powerful combination, Parra said. As the co-founders of the TRU Movement, Washington and Garcia are sought-after speakers with personal life stories that inspire. LU’s Randy Davis, assistant professor of counselor education, will bring the luncheon keynote speaking on social justice.

Registration is free, and participants will be provided with a free continental breakfast and lunch. LU-branded gear will be given away throughout the day. Registered student organizations with at least five members present at the time of the drawing will be awarded one of three $100 prizes in their organization’s club account.
