LU Cardinal Jazz Orchestra and Cardinal Jazz Singers concert

Lamar University’s Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music will present a fresh spin on jazz classics when the Cardinal Jazz Orchestra and Cardinal Jazz Singers perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, in the Rothwell Recital Hall.

The concert will be the first public performance of the Cardinal Jazz Orchestra, pictured above, under the direction of Rick Condit, director of jazz studies, and will feature contemporary arrangements of classic standards such as The Beatles “Blackbird,” “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You” by Tommy Dorsey, “Embraceable You” by George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington's “C-Jam Blues.” The orchestra will also perform fresh arrangements of jazz classics “Recorda Me” by Joe Henderson, saxophonist and National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, and “A Flower is a Lovesome Thing” by Billy Strayhorn.

Cardinal Jazz SingersThe Cardinal Jazz Singers will perform the music of Duke Ellington, Michele Weir, Vince Guaraldi and Kerry Marsh, among others. The Cardinal Jazz Singers are a select group of student and community vocalists and instrumentalists who perform classic and contemporary vocal jazz music. Rebecca Windham, director of vocal jazz at LU, directs the ensemble.
