Alias Brass Company performs with the Lamar Faculty Brass Quintet

Lamar Faculty Brass Quintet

Join the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music for an exciting performance featuring the Lamar Faculty Brass Quintet and the Alias Brass Company at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 16. The quintets will perform popular selections from Ellington, Shostakovich, Bach, Brahms and Wagner in the Rothwell Recital Hall. Admission is free.

The Lamar Faculty Brass Quintet, pictured above, is the university’s longest continuously performing faculty ensemble, having presented hundreds of recitals, concerts, clinics and invitational performances since the early 1970s. Current membership consists of Brian Shook, assistant professor, on trumpet; Robert Culbertson, professor, horn; and Timothy Dueppen, assistant professor, trombone. Current student members are trumpeter Eric Diaz of Baytown, an undergraduate trumpet performance major, and tubist Denzel Richard, Beaumont, an undergraduate music education major. The quintet will perform Duke Ellington’s “The Cottontail Caper,” arranged by Luther Henderson; the “Jazz Suite” by Dmitri Shostakovich, arranged by Johannes C. Schott; and other selections at the concert.

Alias Brass CompanyThe Alias Brass Company, right, is a collaboration between five uniquely talented individuals. Their performances consist of distinctive compositions and ideas that blend virtuosic musicianship with a high level of entertainment. Personnel in the quintet are David Sedgwick on trumpet; Jon Bhatia, trumpet; Natalie Brooke Higgins, French horn; Dueppen, trombone; and Justis MacKenzie, tuba. They will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Fugue in G minor,” arranged by The Canadian Brass and Johannes Brahms’ “Piano Quintet” arranged by MacKenzie, and other selections.

The concert will conclude with the Lamar Faculty Brass Quintet and Alias Brass Company combining to perform “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” by Richard Wagner.
