New scholarship in journalism announced

Sierra Leigh-Anne PhillipsThe Lamar University Foundation has announced an endowed scholarship has been established for the College of Fine Arts and Communication. The Sierra Leigh-Anne Phillips Scholarship in Journalism will provide funding for outstanding students to further their studies at Lamar.

“This scholarship offers resources for students who want to pursue journalism,” said Russ Schultz, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication. “In the field of communication, students need to engage in internships to gain practical experience. However, not all students have the resources to travel and find internships where they will do necessary on-job learning.”

The scholarship is named in memory of Sierra, a young lady who had a passion and gift for writing. Her family wishes to pass on Sierra’s legacy with those who share the same love for writing.

“The existence of this scholarship is to engage interest in journalism and enable students to refine skills learned in the classroom,” said Schultz. “While sustaining the memory of Sierra, the scholarship opens up doors for students. Sierra’s memory will enhance the lives of another generation of students.”
