College Panhellenic Council welcomes 100 new members

cpcThe College Panhellenic Council sororities, Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, and Zeta Tau Alpha, at Lamar University welcome a record number of 100 new members during the fall 2014 formal recruitment and continuous open bidding.  This is the largest new member class the sororities have had in decades.  This well-rounded group of women come from various cities across Texas, other states and countries and are comprised of students representing a wide array of academic majors and interests.

“We are thrilled to have this accomplished group of women joining the Greek community,” said Shannon Copeland, CPC Advisor.  “These new members join the ranks of many other women who have created a legacy of campus leadership, academic excellence and service at Lamar University.”

Throughout the weekend of formal recruitment, many of these women attended events that allowed them to learn about the various chapters’ values, community involvement and outreach, as well as Greek life in general.  The experience also included a series of creative songs and skits which gave the women a glance of each chapter’s inner dynamic.  In addition, the new members participated in a community service project writing letters of encouragement to police officers, military service men and women, and firefighters.

“Formal Recruitment is a mutual selection process.  It is a time when potential new members learn about the benefits of Greek life and choose which organization they most relate to, and it is also a time when the sororities invite women to join their membership who they feel are an asset to their organization.  Sororities provide their members with opportunities for leadership development, opportunities for service, networking, social enrichment, and friendship,” said Robyn Winkle, CPC president.  “Our new members go on to be leaders within their sororities and on campus.  They further enhance our sisterhood and carry on important values and traditions unique to each chapter,” said LaTasha Richard, CPC vice president of public relations.

Recruitment is not just a weekend out of the year – it is a continuous process.  “Every day we try to represent ourselves in the best way possible to live out the values of our organizations and share with others how much our sorority membership has enriched our lives,” said Jordan Lynch, CPC Vice President of Recruitment.  “It is so wonderful that all of these amazing women have found their home in our organizations and to see Greek Life continue to grow at Lamar University,” said Lynch.

The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) is one of the oldest and largest women’s membership organizations in the world, with more than four million members in 26 national and international organizations.  NPC provides leadership training and related programming for the development of collegiate members.  The NPC and its members award more than $2.8 million in scholarships annually, volunteer more than 500,000 hours of their time and donate more than $5 million to worthy causes.
