Lamar offers summer sports camps

Area youngsters looking to improve their game will have numerous opportunities to do so at Lamar University. 

Lamar will offer camps in a variety of sports this summer on campus. Generally, camps are open to athletes ranging in age from 6 to 18. Rates vary per sport. 

Baseball offers three camps in June. Two sessions (June 11-15 and June 18-22) are for youngsters ages 6 to 12. A camp for athletes ages 6 to 18 will be offered from June 25-28. For more information, call 880-8135 or 880-8974. 

Men's basketball coach Pat Knight will conduct his camp at the Montagne Center from June 18-21. For more information, call 880-8301. 

Women's basketball players will have three camps to choose from. A shooting and skills camp for girls entering grades 3 through 12 in the fall will be offered June 11-14. A team camp for girls junior varsity and varsity squads is slated forJuly 27-29. An elite camp for girls high school varsity players will run from Aug. 3-5. For more information, call 880-7384. 

Football will offer a three-day camp for students entering grades 1-8 this fall from June 4-6. A high school offensive lineman/defensive lineman camp for students entering grades 9-12 is set for June 7. A high school skills camp for those entering grades 9-12 is slated for June 8. A junior/senior high school camp for players entering grades 11-12 will be held July 21

A soccer day camp for boys and girls from ages 5-15 will be held July 9-12. Soccer will also conduct a college preparation camp for those entering grades 9-12 from July 23-26. For more information, call 880-2334. 

Tennis will offer five four-day sessions this summer for youngsters from age 10-18. The sessions are from June 4-7, June 11-14, June 18-21, June 25-28 and July 23-26. The camp will run from 9 a.m. until noon each day. For more information, call 880-8056, or visit 

Volleyball will be offering five camps this summer. A three-day youth camp for anyone who has completed grades 4-6 is set for June 5-7. Three individual skills camps will be offered to those who have completed grades 7-10 on June 11-14, July 10-13 and July 30-Aug. 2. A varsity camp for those who have completed grades 9-11 is slated for July 20-22. 

Volleyball will also offer two one-day sessions to those who will be entering grades 10-12. A setter and outside hitter clinic is scheduled for July 16. A setter, libero and middle hitter clinic is on July 17. A one-day varsity team camp that is open to three or four teams with eight to 12 players per team is set for July 28. Softball has a pair of one-day camps designed for elite level players from ages 13-18. On June 21, there will be four two-hour clinics. Offense will be at 9 a.m., infield is at noon, outfield is at 3 p.m. and catching is at 6 p.m. On Aug. 9 there will be a prospect showcase and scrimage camp, witheach player guaranteed to play in two games.
