College of Business and INVISTA partner in Market-Based Management workshop

Southeast Texas business leaders will have an opportunity to enhance their entrepreneurial skills at an upcoming seminar geared toward business owners and managers, civic leaders, executives and board members at non-profit organizations and governmental entities.

Lamar University is partnering with INVISTA to host a seminar on Tuesday, January 10 titled “Unleashing the Entrepreneurial Potential of Your Organization.” The seminar will focus on the concepts of Market-Based Management®. The workshop will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast in Landes Auditorium in Lamar’s Galloway Business Building and conclude with a networking reception in the afternoon. The seminar fee is $75 per participant, which includes breakfast, lunch, the reception and all seminar materials.

MBM® is a framework for applying to a business or nonprofit the principles that generates entrepreneurial initiative and prosperity in free societies. Participants will learn how to apply MBM® inside their organizations, whether they work at a business, nonprofit or governmental entity. The seminar will include lectures, case studies and exercises to explain MBM® concepts effectively used by Koch Industries and its subsidiaries, including INVISTA, worldwide. MBM® is based on concepts which include vision, virtue and talents, decision rights, incentives and knowledge processes.

Dr. Tony Woodlief, former president of the MBM® Institute in Wichita, Kansas, will lead the seminar. Woodlief has worked extensively with the MBM® Team at Koch Industries, and is a frequent contributor to The Wall Street Journal and other publications. He is president of the Bill of Rights Institute, an organization dedicated to teaching young people the words and ideas of America’s founders. He is also a former president of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, a center for economic research.

“Entrepreneurship is the practice of profitably delivering what customers need, often before they even know they need it,” said Woodlief. “It’s solving problems quickly, and responding to changing market demands, and always remembering that what matters is not how hard you work, but how much value you provide to your customers.”

Trochez said the MBM® concepts can help any type of organization because they focus on using resources wisely to create value in a community.

Venta and Jack Hopper, dean of the College of Engineering, have both worked with INVISTA in the areas of student recruiting and support for Lamar University’s programs. The seminar on campus is intended to help business owners and managers, as well as leaders of non-profit organizations, develop expertise for operating their businesses with an entrepreneurial outlook.
