LU hosts Big Red tryouts July 23

Lamar University will host tryouts Saturday, July 23, to select Big Red mascots for upcoming Cardinal athletic seasons.

Big Red – the spirit of Lamar University – will join the Cheerleading Team and Dance Team to perform at home football and basketball games, as well as other campus and community events, said Kristyn Henderson, cheer and mascot coordinator.

The tryouts will be from noon to 3 p.m. in the Group Fitness Studio, next to McDonald Gym in the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center.

Henderson anticipates the selection of two mascots and one understudy. To be eligible for tryouts, students must have been accepted to Lamar University as a full-time student or must have applied and submitted transcripts and test scores for admission.

Mascot candidates must display mastery of skits/dance; improvision; and athletic skills, strength and abilities, Henderson said. Additional criteria include strong leadership qualities, charismatic presence/personality; confidence; independence and enthusiasm.

The Big Red mascot is selected to be an exemplary representative of the university who raises the level of public support for the university while increasing fan support and entertaining at athletic campus and community events, Henderson said.

The candidates will learn a cheer they will perform with Cheerleading Team members before the tryouts, as well as a dance. They will have four or five improvisation scenarios and also will go through an interview process. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes.

“Candidates do not need to learn all the motions, but they need to be able to show how they would participate with the cheerleaders in a game-day situation,” Henderson said. “Each mascot candidate will need to choreograph and perform a skit no more than two minutes in length. This skit should incorporate crowd involvement and candidate personality.”

Each student must provide a mascot application and application agreement, a Lamar University letter of acceptance or a copy of his or her summer 2011 or fall 2011 schedule; a close-up photograph; at least two letters of recommendation; high school or transfer school transcript; and waiver of liability, signed by a parent if the student is younger than 18. Students also must pay a non-refundable $25 mascot application fee, with check or money order made payable to Lamar University Cheerleading.
