The public is invited to an opening reception at the Dishman Art Museum for KVLU: Rewind…In Pictures, Friday, July 12, 2024 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. This pop-up exhibit features archival photographs and memorabilia that highlight the early days (and people) of KVLU long before computer automation, digital media and internet streaming.
K-V-L-U, translated as The Voice of Lamar University, first went on the air on April 30, 1974. On that day, campus and community leaders gathered for the inaugural broadcast followed by the first program to be aired on KVLU, the flagship news magazine from National Public Radio, All Things Considered. Since first going on the air, KVLU has expanded to include an eclectic 24/7 schedule of commercial-free news, music and local features with a mission to educate, enlighten and entertain listeners. The station remains an integral part of the Southeast Texas and Lamar University communities.
“This exhibit is one of the ways we are recognizing KVLU’s 50th anniversary of public broadcasting in Southeast Texas,” says station manager Jason Miller. “It gives us an opportunity to share objects and photographs from a time when KVLU was just getting started through it's first two decades of serving this area.” The exhibit will remain on view on the second floor of the Dishman Art Museum through August 3, 2024. The Dishman Art Museum is located at 1030 E Lavaca Street on the campus of Lamar University.
