Aphasia Conversation Lab – lead by Dr. Jamie Azios

The Aphasia Conversation Lab is housed at the Speech and Hearing Clinic at Lamar University. The Aphasia Conversation Lab is a clinical research laboratory that has three major aims: 1) provide clinical training in innovative social approaches for aphasia, 2) serve as a platform for interactional research in aphasia with a specific focus on conversation or other authentic contexts, 3) provide intervention services to persons with aphasia through a variety of service delivery models. Our overarching goal is to facilitate positive communicative interactions for persons with aphasia and promote opportunities for friendship, support, community involvement, and advocacy.

Creation of a research laboratory in the Speech and Hearing Department for digital health, acoustic, psychoacoustic, and other auditory research. Dr. Vinaya Manchaiah and Dr. Ashley Dockens have secured and installed one wheelchair - accessible high-quality sound treated room, updated an existing sound treated booth, and installed 2 computer-based audiometers, 1 middle ear analyzer, a sound level meter, noise dosimeters, a KEMAR (head and torso simulator for acoustic research), hand-held and video otoscopes, a full online health lab, a hearing aid analyzer to fit and analyze hearing device performance, and appropriate lab furniture. Laboratory studies have already begun in the current space. This lab is fully operational for not only a wide-variety of auditory research projects, but also as a learning center for graduate students enrolled in the Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) program.
