Faculty Brass Quintet

The Lamar Faculty Brass Quintet is the university’s longest continuously performing faculty ensemble, having presented hundreds of recitals, concerts, clinics and invitational performances since the early 1970s. They have appeared in concert with the Symphony of Southeast Texas on several occasions, have appeared at the Texas Music Educators Association Conference, and presented concerts and clinics throughout Texas.

Founded by trumpet instructor Dr. Raul Ornelas and horn instructor Roger Behm, the LFBQ is Lamar’s premiere faculty music ensemble. In 1974, the faculty hornist became Dr. Robert Culbertson, and in 1976, trombonist Dr. Wayne Dyess joined the group as the third faculty member, leaving just the second trumpet and tuba positions as student members. The ensemble has maintained this configuration of three faculty members and two students since that time, and has been the training ground for numerous talented student trumpet and tuba players.

Current Members

The current membership consists of Dr. Brian Shook, trumpet, Dr. Robert Culbertson, horn, and Dr. Timothy Dueppen, assistant professor of trombone. Current student members are trumpeter Eric Diaz, an undergraduate trumpet performance major, and tubist Denzel Richard, an undergraduate music education major.

The student members of the LFBQ audition for a special scholarship to join the ensemble. For more information on auditioning, please contact  Dr. Shook.
