The Lamar University Signers of Color (SOC) and Lamar University Signing Cardinals, with support from the Department of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education and the Texas Society of Interpreters for the Deaf (TSID) Region V, present Beaumont Silent Weekend 2023 featuring workshops presented by Haley Broadway, Dr. Beverly Buchanan, Randy Thuesen, Aaron Capps, Roxann Barrera, and Lindsay Cross. SOC will hosts workshops on a variety of topics including ProTactile language, ethics, medical interpreting, international sign languages, as well as musical and theatrical interpreting.

Our target audience is the interpreting community, interpreter training students, post-secondary and high school ASL students. While we have a primary audience, the event is open to anyone with an interest in sign language, Deafhood, interpreting and Deaf culture.  We prioritize the goal of bridging the linguistic and cultural gap between our Deaf and hard of hearing consumers, services and the service providers within the community.

High School Workshop: A separate event catered specifically toward high school ASL students and deaf students will be offered on April 29, 2023, from 1-4 PM in the Lamar University Communications building. Teachers are asked to accompany their students and bring an additional chaperone. Games and activities conducted by deaf faculty and students will engage participants in authentic language learning experiences that are fun and entertaining. This event is free with a high school ID.
