Institutional Review Board

Charge: The Institutional Review Board (IRB) shall advise the Associate Provost for Research and Sponsored Programs (AVP-Research) on research matters involving human subject participants, including reviewing and approving requests for the performance of human-subject research, reporting adverse events, and revising and updating Lamar University IRB policies and procedures according to federal regulatory changes. The IRB shall consist of at least five members of varying backgrounds, including at least one scientist member, at least one member whose primary concerns are nonscientific, and at least one external member from the community. The IRB shall have the experience, expertise, and professional competence as necessary to promote complete and adequate review of research activities.

Membership & Reporting: Appointment of faculty members from various colleges by AVP-Research for renewable three-year terms and the compliance officer from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs; chair elected by the IRB members and appointed by AVP-Research; charge to IRB given by AVP-Research; recommendations from IRB presented to AVP-Research. Federal training is required for service.
