Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

Charge: The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) shall advise the Associate Provost for Research and Sponsored Programs (AVP-Research) on matters pertaining to the care and treatment of research animals used in research and teaching activities. The IACUC shall approve animal protocols following federal guidelines, maintain standards for ethical and humane treatment of animals, and assist in inspecting animal facilities when necessary. The IACUC shall have a minimum of 5 members, including a veterinarian, a practicing scientist experienced in animal research, a person whose primary concerns are in a nonscientific area, and a community member.

Membership & Reporting: Appointment of faculty members from various colleges by AVP-Research for renewable three-year terms, the compliance officer from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and at least one representative from the Office of EHS & Risk Management; chair elected by the IACUC members and appointed by AVP-Research; charge to Committee given by AVP-Research; recommendations from Committee presented to AVP-Research. Federal training is required for service.
