HONORS COUNCIL MINUTES:   January 25, 2016

PRESENT:  Kevin Dodson, Rebekah Maxwell, Kumer Das, Jeff Palis, Larry Allen, Michael Saar, Ana Christensen, Clare Burns, Randy Yoder, Donna Wilsker, Kathy Fraccastoro, and Andrea Karlin.

Meeting was called to order at 4:05pm by Dr. Kevin Dodson.

DEANS REPORT:

Dr. Dodson informed council of the upcoming Summer programs:  Partners in the Park, The Washington Center Conventions, and the possibility of a summer medical research program.

Recruiting initiatives for the Honors College such as a Modern Language Expo and Model UN were discussed.  Suggestions for an academic event are welcomed.

The Honors College is going to form an External Advisory Board made up of alumni and non-alumni.  It will not be a policy making entity, but to talk about ways to make the Reaud Honors College experience as special as possible for the students.

BUSINESS:

November 9, 2015 minutes were reviewed.  Upon motion by Kathy Fraccastoro, seconded by Ana Christensen, the minutes were approved.

Council reviewed proposed mission statement and made changes.  Dr. Dodson will make suggested changes to the mission statement and email to the council for approval.

Dr. Dodson recommended coming up with guidelines for non-course credit.  The guidelines would list examples of activities accepted for non-course credit along with the number of credits earned according to the activity.  Guidelines will be presented at the next meeting for approval.

Dr. Dodson proposed changing the Reasons for Removal from the College policy for non-participation.  The policy currently states “failure to enroll in Honors classes for three consecutive long semesters may result in removal from the college.”  Dr. Dodson would like to change the policy from three semesters to two semesters.  Council voted on the proposed policy change and upon motion by Kathy Fraccastoro and seconded by Andrea Karlin, the policy change was approved.

Council was asked to start thinking about ideas for the 2016 Summer Reading Club.

Meeting adjourned at 4:50pm.
