GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

The Graduate Council of Lamar University met in the Wimberly Bldg., conference area, room 219 at 1:30 p.m.  Dr. William Harn, Dean of Graduate Studies, presided.  Dr. Dorothy Sisk, Dr. Jimmy Moss, Dr. Ruthie Robinson, Dr. Iva Hall, and Dr. Tracy Benson attended.  Also present was Summer Rather from the Records Department.

MINUTES:

Minutes of the June (#436) meeting were reviewed by the Graduate Council.  Dr.  Moss motioned to approve the documents, Dr. Sisk seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

NEW BUSINESS: 

Records:

Summer Rather from the Records Department attended the Graduate Council meeting to discuss with the Council the new process for tracking Graduate Students who are finishing their degree. 

The program will take the place of the current paper process that the Graduate Studies office is currently using to process graduating students.  Records hopes to have the departments and their designated staff trained by the end of the 2017-18 Academic year.

 

College of Engineering:

Course addition CVEN 6301(Special Topics) was submitted to the Graduate Council. Dr. Sisk motioned to approve with minor corrections regarding the syllabus, Dr. Moss seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

Course addition INEN 6301 (Special Topics) was submitted to the Graduate Council. Dr. Sisk motioned to approve with minor corrections regarding the syllabus, Dr. Moss seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

College of Education and Human Development:

A proposal for course changes was submitted by the Center for Doctoral Studies in the College of Education and Human Development.  The proposal is to change the grading structure of the four Dissertation courses to a U or an S.

Course changes to the Dissertation courses EDUD 6361(Dissertation I), EDUD 6362(Dissertation II), EDUD 6363(Dissertation III), and EDUD 6364(Dissertation IV) were submitted to the Graduate Council by the Center for Doctoral Studies. Dr. Benson motioned to approve, Dr. Robinson seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

The Educational Technology Leadership Department submitted to the Graduate Council a Degree Plan Change Proposal to drop EDLD 5301(Research) and EDLD 5345(Human Resources Development), and add EDLD 5305(Disruptive Innovation in Tech) and EDLD 5339(The Principalship).  The revised degree plan would now include the following courses:

EDLD 5311 (Fundamentals of Leadership)

EDLD 5333 (Leadership for Accountability)

EDLD 5339 (The Principalship)

EDLD 5344 (School Law)

EDLD 5352 (Instructional Leadership)

EDLD 5397 (Internship for Supervision)

EDLD 5302 (Concepts of Educational Leadership)

EDLD 5303 (Applying Educ Tech: Portfolio)

EDLD 5305 (Disruptive Innovation in Tech)

Dr. Sisk motioned to approve with minor corrections regarding the syllabus, Dr. Moss seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

The Educational Leadership Department submitted a Revision to the current Principal Certification Program to drop EDLD 5345 (Human Resources Development), and add EDLD 5339 (The Principalship).  The revised plan would now include the following courses:

EDLD 5311 (Fundamentals of Leadership)

EDLD 5333 (Leadership for Accountability)

EDLD 5339 (The Principalship)

EDLD 5344 (School Law)

EDLD 5352 (Instructional Leadership)

EDLD 5398 (Intern for Principal)

Dr. Sisk motioned to approve with minor corrections regarding the syllabus, Dr. Moss seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health-Several items were submitted for the Graduate Councils' review:

  • Department Name Change

In August 2017, the M.Ed. in Special Education and certificate program officially moved from the Department of Counseling and Special Populations to the Department of Teacher Education per the TSUS board meeting.  As a result, the Department of Counseling and Special Populations no longer includes programming in the area of special populations.  The requested name change is Department of Counseling.

 

  • Change in Degree Plan for the M. Ed. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Course CNDV 5351(Consultation) will be replaced with CNDV 5327(Psychopathology and Basic Psychopharmacology) and maintain 60 hours to satisfy the Texas Administrative Code, Rule 681.83 requirements for licensure. 

 

  • Course Additions: CNDV 5325(Advanced Ethics in Mental Health Counseling), CNDV 5326 (Addiction Counseling), CNDV 5327(Psychopathology and Basic Psychopharmacology), Course Deletion CNDV 5351(Consultation), and Course Change CNDV 5394 (Internship).

 

  • Ed. in School Counseling Degree Program Change

CNDV 5324(Substance Abuse Counseling) will replace one of the CNDV 5394(Internship) courses that are required to make the 48 hour degree plan.

 

  • Change in Grade Mode for CNDV 5394 for the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program and the School-Counseling Program from a letter grade to pass/fail and NG.

 

  • Proposed Advanced Certificate Program

CNDV 5350 (Abnormal Human Behavior)

CNDV 5381 (Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling)

CNDV 5326 (Addictions Counseling)

CNDV 5325 (Advanced Ethics in Mental Health Counseling)

CNDV 5327 (Psychopathology and Basic Psychopharmacology)

 

The 18-hour certificate in Mental Health will be offered to candidates with a Master’s degree in counseling or related field for coursework needed toward the 60-hour licensure requirements in Texas.

Dr. Sisk motioned to approve all submissions by the Department of Counseling, Dr. Hall seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
