GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

The Graduate Council of Lamar University met in room 219, Wimberly Bldg., at 1:30 p.m. 

Dr. William Harn, Dean of Graduate Studies, presided.  Dr. Jimmy Moss, Dr. Tracy Benson, Dr. Maurice (Nick) Rissman, Dr. Ashwini Kucknoor, and Dr. Dorothy Sisk attended.  Also present were Carmen Breaux, Coordinator of Graduate Studies, and Dr. Tony Martin, Executive Director of Assessment, as Ex Officios.  Dr. Jerry Lin, Senior Director of Graduate Programs in the College of Engineering, and Erik Stromberg, Executive Director for Center for Advances in Port Management also attended the meeting. 

MINUTES:

Minutes of the September 21, 2016 (#428) meeting were reviewed by the Graduate Council.  Dr. Sisk motioned to approve the document, Dr. Kucknoor seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

NEW BUSINESS: 

College of Engineering

Dr. Jerry Lin and Erik Stromberg from the Department of the Center for Advances in Engineering & Port Management, presented proposals for three new certification programs to the Graduate Council: Port & Marine Development & Operations; The Management of Ports & Marine Terminals; and Ports, Trade & Global Logistics.  The Council carefully reviewed and discussed the new certificate programs presented.  Dr. Sisk motioned to approve the proposal, Dr. Moss seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

Course Addition and Deletions

Course addition, ELEN 5314 (Introduction to Robotics) and course deletions, ENGR 6601, ENGR 6602, CVEN 6601, CVEN 6602, CVEN 5390, CVEN 5391, ELEN 5390, ELEN 5391, INEN 6601, IVEN 6602, INEN 5390, INEN 5391, MEEN 5390, MEEN 5391, MEEN 6601, MEEN 6602, were submitted by the departments in Engineering to the Graduate Council.  The Council reviewed the additions and deletions, Dr. Rissman motioned to approve, Dr. Sisk seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

College of Business

The M.B.A. department submitted a memo and degree plan to the Graduate Council for a new concentration in Port Management.  The new concentration will include three new course additions listed below.  The Council carefully reviewed and discussed the items submitted.  Dr. Sisk motioned to approve the proposal, Dr. Benson seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

Course Additions

Course addition, BULW 5333 (Legal Framework of Ports & Trade), was submitted by the Accounting and Business Law department to the Graduate Council.  The Council reviewed the addition, Dr. Sisk motioned to approve, Dr. Benson seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

Course addition, ECON 5333 (Economics and Ports & Trade), was submitted by the Economics & Finance department to the Graduate Council. The Council reviewed the addition, Dr. Sisk motioned to approve, Dr. Benson seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

Course addition, MGMY 5333 (Port Property & Asset Management) was submitted by the Management & Marketing department to the Graduate Council.  The Council reviewed the addition, Dr. Sisk motioned to approve, Dr. Benson seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

College of Fine Arts and Communication/Additions and Deletion

Course addition, MULT 5365 (Bach and Beethoven), MULT 5391 (Popular Music of the 20th Century), were submitted by the Music department to the Graduate Council.  The Council reviewed the additions.  Dr. Moss motioned to approve, Dr. Sisk seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

Course deletion, DSDE 6310 (ASL/English Bilingual Education and Deaf Studies), was submitted by the Deaf Education department to the Graduate Council.  The Council reviewed the deletion, Dr. Sisk motioned to approve, Dr. Moss seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

College of Fine Arts and Communication-Tabled Item for Speech and Hearing Department.  Further research is required before a decision can be made on this submission.

Previously tabled revision to G16 Form-proposed changes to the G16 form (change of major for International Graduate Students) were submitted to the Graduate Council by the International Student Services Department.  Marie Graham and Hai Myers from the department came to explain to the Council why the changes are needed and if there are any implications regarding the federal regulations and immigration rules.  The Council carefully reviewed the information presented.  Dr. Sisk motioned to approve the proposed changes to the G16 form, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.


Conclusion: Dr. Sisk made a motion to adjourn, Dr. Kucknoor seconded the motioned and the meeting was concluded. The next meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. in the Wimberly Bldg., Room 219.
