The Lamar Opera Theatre from the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music presents its spring production of "Der Betrogene Kadi," taking place in the 18th century Ottoman Empire. In "Der Betrogene Kadi", the audience can expect the standard musical idiom of the “Turkish Opera” with limping rhythms in even time, dark minor keys hinting exotic color, and scoring for instruments found in Jenissary orchestras.

The Cadi is a local judge with unlimited judicial power. He interprets and administers justice in strict adherence to religious law. To the regret of his wife Fatime, he wants another wife. Although he had never seen her before, he is fixated on the idea of marrying a local beauty named Zelmire. She rejects him citing her engagement to Nuradin, a wealthy businessman. The Cadi, furious with this rejection, plots his revenge. His men disguised as bandits attack Nuradin, beat him brutally, and steal his fortune. Thus, Zelmire and Nuradin are now penniless. Zelmire, a woman of independent spirit and will, knows the Cadi is behind all this, and plots her own revenge.
