In this presentation, Dr. Sarah Chesney, Site Archaeologist at the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site, will highlight the importance of archaeological excavation for better understanding life in early San Felipe. Founded in 1824, this town became the principal settlement in Stephen F. Austin's first colony in Mexican Texas. Fleeing residents burned it to the grown in 1836, leaving a puzzle that has taken generations of archaeological digs to begin to reconstruct. Dr. Chesney will discuss her role in a new public archaeology program at the site and will bring artifacts to discuss with the audience.

Sponsored by The Center for History & Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast.
