Percussion and Jazz Festival at LU

Bobby Sanabria, seven-time Grammy nominated drummer and percussionist, will be the featured artist at the upcoming Lamar University Percussion and Jazz Weekend, March 3 - 4, 2017. Hosted by the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music, the festival will feature workshops, symposiums and master classes, and will conclude with the gala concert featuring Sanabria on Saturday, March 4, at 6 p.m., in the University TheatreThe Cardinal Jazz Orchestra and percussion ensembles will perform with Sanabria.

“Bobby Sanabria is one of the most dynamic performers I’ve ever seen, as well as being a noted expert on the history and culture of Afro-Cuban music,” said Rick Condit, associate professor of music and director of jazz at LU.

The LU Percussion and Jazz Weekend will feature a lecture by Mr. Sanabria on the history of the clave, the rhythmic basis for Afro-Cuban music, and two Latin percussion workshops on Friday, March 3. On March 4, Mr. Sanabria will lead an open rehearsal and jam session from noon to 2 p.m. in the Wiley Band Hall, followed by the gala concert at 6 p.m.

All daytime events at the LU Percussion and Jazz Weekend are free and open to the public. Tickets to the Gala Concert are $8. General admission, $5. for students with I.D., and free to Lamar University students with student I.D.
