Lamar University’s Opera Theatre will present An Evening with Puccini and the Verismo at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 4 - 5, in the Rothwell Recital Hall. All scenes and arias are performed in Italian with projected supertitles of synopses and other information.

“Originating from the Italian word verità (meaning truth), verismo is a post-Romantic style and tradition in Italian opera,” said Serdar Ilban, director of LU Opera Theatre and assistant professor of voice in the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music. “The verismo tradition and its representative composers sought to bring the naturalism and realism into opera. They were particularly interested in subject matters that reflected the life in the lower class. Remote southernmost regions of Italy and their customs, life styles, idioms, dialects and daily struggles became the basis for many verismo operas.”

The performance features selections from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Le Villi, Edgar, Gianni Schicchi, Suor Angelica, La Bohème, and much more.

General admission is $10, and tickets may be reserved in advance. For tickets or more information, call the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music at (409) 880-8144.
