Export: Graphic Design in Southeast Texas, on view at the Dishman Art Museum June 3 through July 31, features locally designed work, including advertising, posters, brochures, web design, printmaking and illustrations. The wide variety of work shows how the field of graphic design is evolving and growing through the use of emerging technology, and also demonstrates how the deep traditions of the Golden Triangle region influence visual culture. As we reflect on the “exports” of our local design community, we can begin to imagine how graphic design will continue to grow and enhance the region.

Southeast Texans are quite familiar with the export process due to our region’s vast industries that deliver via all modes of transportation. Graphic design is no different in that it transmits ideas across all varieties of media. So in its very essence, graphic design is an act of exportation. In attempting to deliver clear and effective communication to audiences, graphic designers are sending messages outward to be received by viewers both locally and beyond.

The show is curated by Sherry Saunders Freyermuth, assistant professor of graphic design in the Department of Art, and will feature works by, Americom Marketing, e.Sullivan Advertising & Design, K. Guy Designs, LaRue Art +Copy, Might Could Studios, Texas Beard Company, and a timeline-display depicting the visual history of Lamar University.

The Dishman Art Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Admission and parking are free. For more information, call (409) 880-8959 or visit
