Welcome to Mechanical Engineering

Hello there!

My name is Mansour Karkoub and I am your new Department Chair. On behalf of all the faculty and staff, I wanted to welcome each and every one of you (returning and new, undergraduate and graduate students) to Lamar University and wish you a very successful new academic year. You have chosen an awesome career path and an exceptional discipline. Mechanical engineers are in high demand: 1640 mechanical engineers per year are needed in Texas and 21,000 nationwide as per the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. You are at the right time and right place. Our goal is to provide you with the highest quality education to help you successfully enter the job market or pursue a graduate career.

Lamar University is aiming to train next generation engineers and scientists and we, at the mechanical engineering department, are constantly evolving and seeking excellence in our approaches to creating relevant educational experiences for all students, from first-year undergraduate through graduate levels. Our curriculum combines mechanical engineering fundamentals with applied research projects and experiential learning and prepares graduates for the industry-rich Southeast Texas and beyond. Our Mechanical Engineering program is accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) and our goal is to ensure that our curriculum is rigorous, relevant, and meets and exceeds industry expectations. To achieve this goal, our Industry Advisory Board (IAB), comprised of experts from various industries, such as Lockheed Martin, ExxonMobil, Flowserve, Motiva, …, along with our faculty, periodically review and update our department objectives, outcomes, and curriculum. This process ensures our curriculum to be rigorous, relevant and consistent with industry requirements and will help us maintain the highest engineering education standards.

While we are the largest undergraduate department in the College of Engineering, we strive to provide career advising to each student individually. We have assigned a faculty advisor to you to help you complete your degree smoothly and successfully. So, whether you have a question about mechanical engineering careers, curriculum, or industrial opportunities, knock on your advisor’s door and ask.

Thank you for your interest in our program and we look forward to seeing you on campus.
