Center for Advances in Port Management Brings New Opportunities

The Department of Industrial Engineering and the College of Business at Lamar University have partnered with waterfront industry professionals to offer courses in port management that will lead to a Master of Engineering Management (meM.) Degree or certifications specializing in port management. Courses offered through the program aim at improving technical and administrative knowledge as professional’s advance to senior leadership roles.

The Center for Advances in Port Management formed in the fall of 2015 through a $2.72 million special appropriation from the State of Texas. A steering committee, made up of Lamar University faculty and waterway professionals, guides the development of teaching efforts and research projects. The Center uses faculty resources from across campus including the College of Engineering and College of Business.

The search for an Executive Director landed the program in the careful hands of Erik Stromberg.  With decades of experience as a port administrator, Stromberg understands the importance of training tomorrows port managers today. “Managing a port requires a wide array of skills and knowledge,” says Stromberg, “while our students may have a background in any one of those key areas, the Center will give them the breadth of knowledge across all key functions required to become a successful port director today.”
