A Letter to the LUCOE Students from the Dean

Dear LUCOE Students,

Date: 3/27/2020

This is a big change, but not unexpected. Thank you for being so adaptive during this challenging and transitioning time, and once again demonstrating your dedication to your education and to Lamar University (LU). I am very proud of each of you. As you may have heard, the City of Beaumont as well as other local jurisdictions have issued stay-at-home orders. Because LU is a state agency, our employees fall under exclusions associated with essential functions of the state government. Because of these exemptions, Lamar University remains open to provide access to key services as needed to support your success and needs. The LUCOE remains committed to your safety, health and wellbeing and to your academic success. We are available and will continue to assist you, but we ask that you contact us remotely if at all possible.

If you are living on campus, please continue to adhere to the CDC’s guidelines for gatherings of no more than ten people and social distancing of approximately six feet. Brooks Shivers Dining Hall will continue to offer meals for pickup and the Mary and John Gray Library will remain open for use as necessary along with the computer lab located on the seventh floor.

If you have lab-style classes and your professor has required on-campus components for the course to continue, these will no longer occur while the stay-at-home orders are in place, with extremely limited exceptions that will be only approved on a case-by-case basis with very specific requirements to ensure your safety.  Your professors will reach out to you with updated procedures as some courses may have the opportunity for resuming after the stay-at-home orders are lifted, but others may require more detailed instructions. Also, please feel free to reach out to your instructors and departmental staff. All contact information can be found online at the https://www.lamar.edu/engineering/index.html, https://www.lamar.edu/engineering/about/deans-office.html, https://www.lamar.edu/engineering/chemical/index.html, https://www.lamar.edu/engineering/civil/index.html, https://www.lamar.edu/engineering/electrical/index.html, https://www.lamar.edu/engineering/industrial/index.html, and https://www.lamar.edu/engineering/mechanical/index.html. You can also find a full description of all university services available and for COVID-19 updates here.

You can read President Evans’ letter to LU students here, in case you missed it.

I thank each of you for your flexibility and dedication during this time and everyone, please stay safe and healthy. We will once again persevere and emerge even stronger than before.

-with Cardinal Pride,

Brian N. Craig, PhD, PE, CPE
