Cheryl A. Nelson, Ed.D.



Dr. Cheryl A. Nelson has a bachelor’s degree in education, a master’s degree in school administration and a doctorate in educational leadership. She is certified in the State of Texas as an elementary math teacher, elementary reading teacher, master reading teacher, special education teacher, english as a second language teacher, dyslexia specialist, diagnostician and principal. Dr. Nelson has worked in Texas public schools for over 20 years at the elementary, middle and high school level.

She worked as an adjunct instructor for Lamar Institute of Technology, and served as university supervisor for Lamar University. Dr. Nelson currently teaches full-time in LU’s Department of Counseling and Special Populations. She has published and presented research papers in various local, state and national journals and conferences. Her past areas of research include teacher leadership, special education, dyslexia identification/interventions and differentiated instruction.

Dr. Nelson's future research agenda includes counseling and special populations, focusing on students receiving special education and dyslexia services. She is proud to associate with a number of professional organizations, including the Council for Exceptional Children, International Reading Association, National Council of Teachers of English, Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading and the Consortium of State Organizations for Texas Teacher Education.
