Cheryl A. Nelson, Ed.D.

As we begin, I want to tell you a little about myself. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Education, a Master’s degree in School Administration, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. I am certified in the state of Texas as an elementary math teacher, elementary reading teacher, master reading teacher, special education teacher, English as a second language (ESL) teacher, dyslexia specialist, diagnostician and principal. I have worked in Texas public schools for over 20 years at the elementary, middle, and high school level.

At the post-secondary level, I worked as an adjunct instructor for Lamar Institute of Technology, and served as University Supervisor for Lamar University. I currently teach full-time in Lamar University’s department of counseling and special populations. I have published and presented research papers in various local, state, and national journals and conferences. Past areas of research include teacher leadership, special education, dyslexia identification/interventions, and differentiated instruction. My future research agenda includes counseling and special populations, focusing on students receiving special education and dyslexia services.  I am proud to associate with a number of professional organizations including the Council for Exceptional Children, International Reading Association, National Council of Teachers of English, Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading, and the Consortium of State Organizations for Texas Teacher Education.
