Frequently Asked Questions


Applying for an Standard Texas Certificate

To be eligible to receive your Initial Texas Standard Teacher Certificate, candidates must have met the following requirements:

  • Graduated from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree or higher, 
  • Completed all coursework required by their degree plan or deficiency plan,
  • Completed clinical teaching or internship 
  • Passed the appropriate TExES Content exam AND 
  • Passed the TExES EC-12 Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities Exam

When these requirements have been met, each candidate MUST apply for certification to be fully certified to teach in Texas.

There are two steps to apply for your Standard Texas Certificate:
     1. Apply with the state through TEA.
     2. Apply with Lamar University/Certification Office at TK20 Online System.

Procedures for applying for certification with TEA:

  • Go to TEA Online site: http://tea.texas.gov/
  • Click on TEAL LOGIN in the top bar navigation (blue bar).
  • Click on…Apply for Certification
  • Click on Application and scroll downward to "Standard".
  • Complete affidavit and do the following

    - I request to be recommended by this Entity, select Lamar University (University Based
    - Subject applying for, enter your certification area(s)
    - Continue as instructed and click on Apply.
  • Continue to follow instructions as directed.

Applying for a Texas Professional Certificate (Principal, Counselor, Diagnostician, Superintendent or other Administrative or Advanced Practice Certifications)

To be eligible for certification, candidates must have met the following requirements:

  • Documentation of at least two (2) years teaching experience (a copy of your Service Record from your personnel office will be required)
  • Graduated with a M.Ed. (For "certification only", candidates must hold an approved Master’s degree),
  • Completed all required coursework on your degree plan,
  • Completed internship AND Passed the appropriate TExES exam 

When these requirements have been met, each candidate MUST apply for certification to be fully certified to in Texas.

     1. Apply with the state through TEA.
     2. Apply with Lamar University/Certification Office at TK20 Online System.
