Practicum and Internship

The field experiences courses in Practicum/Internship are rich, professional opportunities for you to integrate and apply knowledge and skills in settings specific to your fields. You will take courses concurrently with your field experience to apply knowledge and skills as meaningful opportunities toward professional growth. In the field, you will adhere to the professional organizations’ codes of ethics for practicing within your respective scope of practice under the supervision of a university faculty member and a qualified site supervisor. Early in your programs of study, we begin encouraging you to establish a field site aligned with your professional goals.

Field experience courses are taken sequentially over the period of two 15-week semesters (Fall/Spring) and/or 10-week semester (Summer).

The M.Ed. in Counseling and Development requires one Practicum CNDV 5390 and two Internships CNDV 5390C.

Practicum requirements include:

  • 40 clock hours of direct service and 60 indirect hours with actual clients which contributes to the development of counseling skills
  • Weekly interaction that averages one hour per week of individual and/or triadic supervision throughout the field experience
  • Weekly university group supervision for an average of 1.5 hours in length

Internship requirements include:

  • 120 clock hours of direct service and 180 indirect hours with actual clients
  • Weekly interaction that averages one hour per week of individual and/or triadic supervision throughout the field experience
  • Weekly university group supervision which is no less than 1.5 hours in length

Students in the Professional School Counseling Program who reside in Texas must complete Practicum and Internship at a Texas Education Agency (TEA) approved site with a qualified site supervisor who holds a certification in school counseling with 3 years’ professional experience. Field experience courses in the School Counseling Program are offered only in the Fall and Spring semesters.
