Workforce Training

The CICE Workforce Training is positioned to help meet some of the workforce needs for billions of dollars in current and future regional projects in a 10 week or less training process. Lamar University CICE team with the Gold Triangle Empowerment Center to prepare participants for job placement and long term employment in the CONSTRUCTION Industry, developing partnerships with industries and contractors. Job readiness and life skills training is provided. Upon completing all training participants eligible to receive job placement assistance, and participants eligible to receive nationally recognized certifications, including National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). When you expect MORE, you get MORE!

Next Steps

If the Workforce Development Training program is an interest to you, here are the steps you will need to take to be successful:

  1. Fill out the application: The application can be found on the sidebar, or you can fill out a paper copy by coming by Room 117 in the CICE building or the GTEC office at 617 Procter Street, Port Arthur.
  2. Counseling and Register for the TABE Assessment (see information about the TABE Assessment below)
  3. Complete TABE Assessment and Orientation (There are no costs and will be held on the same day)
  4. Sign up for a class: You can see the Training Schedule on the right sidebar to find when the next class offering is.
  5. Complete 2 week Life Skills and Critical Thinking program
  6. Complete 8 week Industry-Specific courses
  7. Become NCCER certified


The TABE Assessment is a required exam for the Workforce Training, covering subjects in English, Mathematics, and Reading. The assessment lasts between 2-3 hours, and it is held at Lamar University's CICE. You will need to bring your Driver's License (or valid Student ID), Social Security card, and proof of residence.

TABE Testing Days and Times:
  • Tuesdays at 6pm-9pm
  • Wednesdays at 9am-12pm

For Employers

  • Providing trained individuals who can be used to supplement labor for short and long-term construction recovery
  • Students would maintain sustainable work for the expected 10 year rebuilding process of their community while gaining experience and a salary.
  • Meets HUB Section 3 requirements
  • Allows efforts for a staffing service to select building contractors or managed services to mentor all who apply to the program
